There is no reason for a shutdown. Here's how it happened:
Speaker Paul Ryan
At this hour, the federal government is needlessly shut down because of Senate Democrats. This did not need to happen. But it is important for people to understand why it did.
On Thursday, this House passed a bill to keep the government open and extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which covers nearly 9 million children from low-income families. No games, no strings attached.
Last night, Senate Democrats blocked the bill and shut down this government. But why? What part of the bill do they oppose? The answer is: they have no problem with any of it. We do some crazy things in Washington, but this is madness.
Senate Democrats refuse to fund the government unless we agree to their demands on something entirely unrelated: immigration. It is a shakedown strategy, and in 2013, Senator Schumer himself said: "No matter how strongly one feels about an issue, you shouldn’t hold millions of people hostage. That’s what the other side is doing. That’s wrong and we can’t give in to that."
He was right! But that's exactly what he and his party are doing now.
There is no reason for a shutdown, and to the men and women around the country who work this government, the military, and law enforcement, thank you for your service. You deserve much better than this. We hope it will end very soon.
To Senate Democrats: stop holding our troops and children's health insurance hostage. Do the right thing. Open this government back up.
So, leave the government shut down until the democrat senators cry uncle and ask for it to be funded once again. The 60 vote margin on the bill that shut down the government REQUIRED democrat participation to pass, making it bi-partisan. Re-funding the government would also be a bi-partisan effort with the republicans being the good guys.
Trump won this one too! It’s now the #SchumerSurrender !!!
He called their bluff. I guess them getting hammered and them realizing Trump would NOT back down, they had no choice but to cave. It's hilarious! I'm loving it!
I’m loving it too, and no, I’m not yet tired of winning.....let’s keep winning!
He has far surpassed expectations. They just can't get him to budge and it's wonderful!
Fresh Polling: Shutting Down Government Over DACA Was Not Good For Democrats
The government will officially reopen Monday afternoon after a three day tantrum from Democrats over DACA. Just before 1 o'clock, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made the announcement Democrats would vote in favor of reopening. The final tally was 81-18.
But new polling from Harvard-Harris shows Democrats following Schumer's lead to shut down the government on the issue of illegal immigration was wildly unpopular among the majority of Americans.
When asked, "Would you favor or oppose Democrats voting to shut the government down if the continuing budget resolution does not include restoring so-called DACA work permits for undocumented immigrants brought here illegally by their parents?" 58 percent of voters responded with "oppose."
Polling also showed a majority back White House priorities on ending the Diversity Visa Lottery Program, eliminating chain migration and building a border wall.
What's next for the illegal immigration and DACA debate is to be foreseen. Schumer claims McConnell made an "agreement" in exchange for Democrat votes on the issue. Meanwhile, the White House is rejecting a re-introduction of the Flake-Graham-Durbin proposal and arguing it doesn't include sufficient border security or interior enforcement. It also fails to end chain migration and the Diversity Visa Lottery Program.
"Rather than address these three essential priorities, the Flake-Graham-Durbin proposal fails to enshrine into law these baseline immigration reforms, which were deemed necessary and essential by the very people responsible for enforcing and administering our immigration system every day," the White House released in a statement.
Congress has 17-days to find a deal on DACA, which is again being tied to a temporary spending bill, or face another shutdown.
I really think democrats don’t want to solve this DACA issue....it’s always been a way to mobilize support. As America tires of it all (and polling indicates it is, sort of) they will need to find a new issue.
This is just Obama revisited. Thanks to him and only him, we have DACA -- a new segment of the democrat party.
Trump sure has his work before him, undoing the obama damage!
Yes, he does. But, so far, he seems to be doing it effectively. ;)
He sure is doing it very effectively.
America is tired of it all and the left! The polls are showing it.
