Program Brings Firearms to School to Teach Gun Safety, Marksmanship #2A

This is awesome! They used to have this in schools years ago.

A program overseen by Project Appleseed is bringing a plethora of firearms to a Colorado middle school to teach students about gun safety.

The three-day program is being held at Carver Middle School in Colorado City, Colorado.

According to Fox 31, Project Appleseed coordinator Jim Hathit said, “We’re teaching them about the firearms so they are familiar with them.”

At one point in the program, various firearms were spread out on a table in front of students. The firearms included revolvers, pistols, and rifles, among other things, and the students were allowed to handle the weapons, to feel what it is like to hold and respect a gun.

Hathit observed, “I think it’s better for them to have respect for it, know how to handle it, not that they should, but that they are aware about the firearms. It’s not an, ‘Oh, what’s this? What can we do with this?’”

Tristan Baker, a seventh-grader, said, “I think it’s pretty cool. It’s not something you know you don’t get to see every day. It’s something that you get to come in and say, ‘Wow, look at all these nice, awesome, firearms.’”

Courtney Proctor, an eighth-grader, said the program complimented the shooting she did with her parents when younger.

The last day of the program allows the students to spend a full day at an outdoor range shooting the guns they handled and studied during the first two days.

I was born in the military so I have lived with guns my whole life. My grandfather was a beat cop in Boston. I'm not sure if I'm old enough to remember having this type of curriculum in any school I attended. At high school, I personally and many others as well, had pickups with a rifle in them. Typically .22 or a shotgun, in a rack, that went to school with us. But we went "plinking" or hunting (depending on time of year) after school. Both of my kids had shooting safety and were in 4H shooting sports. Then later in FFA. They participated after being taught responsible gun handling and safety by my wife & I jointly. I think that upbringing could be perhaps the key. I can't for the life of me get why the kids that do, end up shooting up a school. Sometimes I think that the "participation trophy" mentality is a large factor. The idea that the child cannot get an "A" like his/her peers is devastating. Especially if you have been raised with the idea that you should be awarded for just "showing up". Many of the kid shootings are said to be pissed about grades, but that was no different when I attended. I don't have any better answer but to say that I feel this type of curriculum with responsible parenting would be beneficial.

They used to do this in schools. I didn't have this when I was in school. Wish I had.

Kids today are reprimanded for carving out a gun-shaped pastry or wearing a tee-shirt from the National Rifle Association. But America hasn’t always been so gun-phobic.

Check out these pictures of firearm safety, taught in Indiana schools in 1956…

From LIFE’s article (emphasis mine):

In 1954 more than 550 U.S. children under 15 were killed in accidents involving the careless handling of firearms, five of them in lake County, Indiana. [In 2010, 606 people were killed by "accidental discharge of firearms," according to the CDC. — Ed.] This situation shocked Indiana Conservation Officer Rod Rankin, who decided to offer a course in gun safety to any interested child in the county. In the past year 2,500 children from 6 years on, with the approval of their parents, have taken him up on it.

Rankin stresses two things: never point as gun at anybody, even in play, and always check immediately to see if the gun is loaded … Rankin is glad to answer routine questions such as “How fast and far does a bullet go?” but tries to discourage ones like “Have you ever shot anyone?” and “If you shoot a man in the head how long does it take him to die?”

Some people think Rankin is starting the kids on firearms too young. But the National Rifle Association points out that four states now permit gun safety courses in grade school and says, “The earlier a kid learns to respect a gun and what not to do with it the better chance natural curiosity won’t get him in trouble.”

By banning gun-shaped Pop-Tarts, are we teaching children to respect a gun’s power or are we only feeding their natural curiosity — curiosity that, without proper education, could be deadly?

I think this one might be my favorite — I spy with my little eye a future gun-control advocate in the back, third from right:

I'm pleased to see this school doing this. It is my hope that this spreads across the country. Quite valuable to teach firearms safety and train at a young age. Will result in far less accidents from curious children and a respect for weapons.
