President Donald Trump has nominated the first African-American woman for promotion to general in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Col. Lorna M. Mahlock will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general, if confirmed, the U.S. Department of Defense announced on Tuesday. Mahlock is currently the deputy director of Operations, Plans, Policies, and Operations Directorate at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Mahlock has served in Germany, worked in the Office of Legislative Affairs and served in Okinawa, Japan.
Women make up just 8% of the Marine Corps, but Gen. Glenn Walters, the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, has said that number is set to rise, ABC News reports. The Marine Corps has a historically poor track record in attracting African-American and female applicants to its ranks, and in 2012 launched a campaign to increase its diversity, The New York Times reported.
If this woman has earned her promotion, then she should have her promotion. If her promotion is for any other reason than that, such as she is a woman and or black, just more progressive political correctness.
As long as her promotion is based solely on her merit, pro and con and time in grade, and absolutely nothing else, then I am elated for her and for the Presidents choice. Semper Fi!!! USMC 1967-1972
Agreed, Jerome. I was raised by a Marine. WW2... A Marine that had 3 daughters and guess WHO he made his boy? Yeah, you got it, me! LOL Semper Fi
I take issue with even the mention of race or gender with specificity. Just sayin.....
So do I, JG!
Exactly JG. Achievements over politics every time.
Unfortunately, putting everyone in some category is what both sides do, and Obama made it so much worse. His big campaign speech on ‘race’ served to ignite issues that were subsiding more with each generation. The left really cannot afford to lose the race issue....or the immigration issue.
That's exactly what the leftists do. Put everyone in categories and divide further to keep them voting for the poverty they live in. Keep getting hand outs instead of hand ups!
It is an effective means of remaining "elite"!
National Geographic says that race is a made-up label. Read the story here --> https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2018/04/race-genetics-s...
Very interesting read, JB!
Humanity seems to be an non-homogeneous collection of creatures that is difficult to classify. Therein lies the wisdom of so many who have come before us and asked that we treat each other as individuals not as members of a class or group.
Now that we have woven this classification system into the fabric of our society, how can we overcome it?
