North and South Korea to officially end war after 65 years, new report says

North and South Korea are apparently going to agree to bring an end to the decades-long military conflict on the Korean Peninsula, a South Korean newspaper reported Tuesday.

The leaders of North and South Korea – Kim Jong Un and President Moon Jae-in, respectively – are slated to meet next week, in advance of the tri-nation summit with President Donald Trump sometime before May.

It was reported that the two nations are going to officially put an end to the Korean military conflict, which technically lasted from 1950 to 1953 but was ended with a truce, not a peace treaty, according to the South Korean newspaper Munhwa Ilbo, which cited an unnamed South Korean official.

The two nations could also discuss the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates them, and possibly return it to its original state, the newspaper reported.

It was recently announced that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un agreed to meet at a summit with President Trump, and that North Korea is also willing to talk denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

While the date and location of the three-way summit have not been announced, the North-South Korean meeting is set for April 27.

If this is actually happens, it will be amazing. I give all credit to Trump!

This has long been sought by families in both Koreas.

It will be amazing if it all happens. 65 years. Wow!

Hope for the sake of the Koreans, the meeting is successful.

So do I, Kwic!

Mike Pompeo secretly met with Kim Jong Un

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. and North Korea are holding direct talks at "extremely high levels" in preparation for a potential summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

But White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump and Kim have not spoken directly.

Trump appeared to answer in the affirmative to that question when asked about the talks at his private Mar-a-Lago club, where he is hosting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
"Let's leave it a little bit short of that," he said later, adding, "We have had talks at the highest level."

U.S. officials told The Associated Press later Tuesday that CIA Director Mike Pompeo had recently traveled to North Korea to meet with Kim. The officials spoke anonymously about Pompeo's trip because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Trump also confirmed that North and South Korea are working to negotiate an end to hostilities before next week's meeting between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The meeting will be the third inter-Korean summit since the Koreas' 1945 division.

"They do have my blessing to discuss the end of the war," said Trump, who welcomed Abe to his Florida resort on Tuesday.

Trump is looking to hold his own summit with Kim in the next two months and said five locations are under consideration. The president would not disclose the sites but said the U.S. was not among them.

The proposed summit follows months of increasingly heated rhetoric over the North's nuclear weapons program.

"We have had direct talks at very high levels — extremely high levels — with North Korea," Trump said.

South Korea's Moon says North seeking 'complete denuclearization'

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has expressed its desire for “complete denuclearization” of the Korean peninsula and is not seeking conditions such as U.S. troops withdrawing from the South first, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Thursday.

Moon said big-picture agreements about normalization of relations between the two Koreas and the United States should not be difficult to reach through planned summits between North and South, and between the North and the United States, in a bid to rein in the North’s nuclear and missile programs.

“North Korea is expressing a will for a complete denuclearization,” Moon told reporters.

“They have not attached any conditions that the U.S. cannot accept, such as the withdrawal of American troops from South Korea. All they are expressing is the end of hostile policies against North Korea, followed by a guarantee of security.”

North Korea has defended its weapons programs, which it pursues in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, as a necessary deterrent against perceived U.S. hostility. The United States stations 28,500 troops in South Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War.

North Korea has said over the years that it could consider giving up its nuclear arsenal if the United States removed its troops from South Korea and withdrew its so-called nuclear umbrella of deterrence from South Korea and Japan.

South Korea announced on Wednesday that it is considering how to change a decades-old armistice with North Korea into a peace agreement as it prepares for the North-South summit this month.

FROM THE BRINK: Kim SUSPENDS Missile Tests, SHUTS Nuclear Sites

North Korean authorities announced Friday evening that the Hermit Kingdom will suspend all missile tests and shut down its nuclear testing facilities; setting the stage for next month’s high-stakes meeting between Kim Jong Un and President Trump.

According to Fox News, the North Korean regime announced their decision to suspend their weapons programs just hours after delegations from North and South Korea held negotiations to find a “permanent” settlement to the 68-year long war.

“From April 21, North Korea will stop nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles,” the Korean Central News Agency said, according to Yonhap News. “The North will shut down a nuclear test site in the country’s northern side to prove the vow to suspend nuclear test.”

“They have not attached any conditions that the U.S. cannot accept, such as the withdrawal of American troops from South Korea. All they are expressing is the end of hostile policies against North Korea, followed by a guarantee of security,” said South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
