~ Where the Sun Will Never Set on Our liberty ~
Wednesday, Michigan passed legislation doing two things; 1) mandating drug testing for welfare and 2) requiring "Community Service" for public assistance.
Two laudable goals? Not by a long shot unless you believe that the government, anyone's government, should tell you how to live your life and make your life decisions for you. Without regard to the Constitutional issues, as adults we all make decisions for ourselves. Sometimes good and sometimes not! But, as adults, we should always be afforded the opportunity to "enjoy" the fruits of our decisions. It's how we learn, it's how we teach. The current system is exactly the reason that welfare has failed. No one has incentive to succeed. Let some folks fail and suffer the "fruits" of their decisions and people will police themselves! Conducts will change. Under the current system, no one is allowed to fail or suffer. Uncle Sugar is there to step in and bail them out. But, is it really a bail-out to entrap someone in a welfare system offering so little hope?! How is it that a failed government believes that the great collective will have any better success with life decisions that an individual?
And, then there's the Constitutional issues. Where does ANYONE get off telling someone else how to live?! What happened to "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?" Oh, someone might be hurt or hurt someone else. True, but we have thousands of laws already on the books for that! Can anyone really take comfort when the government controls so many aspects of our lives?
So what's really going on? Oh, heck that's the easiest part, as is the solution. We don't like being played the fools. We work, produce and see so much of the "fruits" of our labor taken by the government for people perceived as lazy, doped up, coke heads. If you don't like that system then stop it! It is years of failed government policy to blame not those "lazy, doped up, coke heads!" In the 60s Johnson declared the "Great Society!" Since then we've funded more than a trillion dollars for welfare and the "War on Drugs!" What's the result? More people classified as "poor" and in "poverty" than at any time in our history and more people in prison for drugs than ever. Many, many more than anywhere else in the world. Does that sound like success to you?
What to do? If you really don't like being played the fool, stop all welfare. No one gets it! Everyone sinks or swims on the strength of their efforts, education and character! They will have to rely on friends and family, just like in the early day of our history. Come on, you must have heard the stories about how "once we were a great nation?" What do you think made us great? No it wasn't charity, it was self-determination, personal responsibility, reward for personal achievement! That is what made us great and will do so again!
But no, we can't do that, what about the children?!
And, then there's Community Service. Great concept, having to "earn" your keep. At the end-of-the-day being able to say that I was a "net contributor!" What an empowering feeling!
So let's do it! Let's kill welfare and mandate that everyone drawing public assistance be required to perform Commuunity Service. It's for all our good!
So your position is that:
1) mandating drug testing for welfare is bad and
2) requiring "Community Service" for public assistance is good?
You are correct on both counts!
