In the sci-fi tv series Continuum, a group of self-proclaimed freedom fighters named Liber8 travel back in time to try and prevent corporate conglomerates from wrecking their world. In their dystopian future, corporations have become so big and powerful that they have supplanted government, and have imposed a high-tech surveillance police state on the populace. But what seems like sci-fi may not be that far from our reality.

In the later part of the 19th century, America saw its first tycoons with men like Rockefeller, Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan. These men became so rich and powerful that they controlled vast sectors of industry, creating the first monopolies. At one point these three men joined together to essentially buy the presidency by financing the William McKinley campaign. This was not out of the realm of possibility as they owned newspapers and had a combined net worth of over one trillion dollars in today’s dollars. And it worked. McKinley became the 25th President of the United States. But as fate would have it, he was assassinated just six months into his second term.

Fast forward to today and it seems as if history is repeating itself. Project Veritas uncovered leaked documents, video from a Senior Google Executive, and testimony from a Google insider that revealed their plans to prevent President Trump, or really any Republican, from ever being elected again. Such a revelation should not be taken lightly. Researcher Dr. Robert Epstein has said “When search results favor one candidate, or one cause for that matter, it shifts opinions and it shifts votes. And I mean dramatically so… It can shift voting preferences among undecided voters by 20 percent or more easily, and up to 80 percent in some demographic groups.” To put this into perspective, Google can, by altering their search algorithms, shift upwards 15 million votes without anyone knowing they’re being manipulated or leaving a paper trail.

And what did Project Veritas get for revealing this seedy seditious activity? Their videos were banned from various social media platforms including YouTube, Twitter, and Vimeo. This revels another disturbing trend. Just as the old tycoons formed an alliance to achieve a common objective, so too the tech tycoons are marching in lock-step together to achieve a shared agenda, often by evading the restraints of the Constitution.

Like the tycoons of old, the new tech tycoons control vast sectors of industry and wealth. But unlike the old tycoons they possess something far greater. They possess and control vast amounts of information, including our personal information that we have naively volunteered to them over the years. That makes them very powerful, and they are not afraid to wield that power. Censoring Project Veritas was just the tip of a very large iceberg. They have showed they are not afraid to censor Conservatives or really any forms of dissent. For instance, recently Dr. Mercola had his content removed from Google’s search engine due to his criticisms of Google. In addition, political commentator Steven Crowder had his channel demonetized on YouTube, even though it was determined he didn’t violate any of YouTube’s policies. And the list goes on. This tells me no one is safe, from the least to the greatest. If none of this concerns you, it should. But there is a solution.

What the new tech tycoons have become are de facto monopolies. While they don’t possess all the qualities of traditional monopolies, there is enough overlap for them to be considered pseudo-monopolies. The government dealt with John D. Rockefeller’s monopoly by breaking up his company, Standard Oil Company, into smaller entities. Perhaps it is time to apply those antitrust laws to the tech tycoons. When a private company becomes so big and powerful as to pose a threat to The Republic and personal freedoms, it’s time to look into breaking them up too. Least we end up like the fictitious world of Continuum.

Good post!  Our phones pinpoint location whether we have that turned on or not.   Personally, I cannot be convinced that it isn’t so.  Americans are willing allow this high tech spying and data mining. It is unbelievable.

Trump is quite unique in that these tech companies have been unable to separate him from his voters, at least so far.  They will likely succeed with future Republican candidates.  It’s disheartening and concerning.
