The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed a federal rule that would require “all light passenger vehicles” to have an EDR, or Event Data Recorder, by September 1, 2014. Also, please note that the comment period for this proposed rule ended last February.
These EDRs (which are already built into 96% of new vehicles), measure everything from speed to seat belt use. Supposedly, information is only recorded in the moments before and after a car accident; however, according to the head of the design team that standardized these EDRs for automakers, Tom Kowalick, “black box data retrieved from U.S. car accidents in a single day would provide more information than a year’s worth of crash testing.”
