Bill Bennett: Why are we panicking? This virus is on track to kill fewer people than the flu
Bennett’s line, essentially, is that Trump got suckered by a bunch of hype for a disease that just isn’t that dangerous except to people who are old or have some sort of underlying health problem. Which can’t be more than — what? Fifty million Americans? A hundred million?
Here we have Bennett noting that the projected 60,000 deaths from coronavirus are about how many there are in a bad flu season. Trump let the egghead scientists talk him into shutting down the economy over that? Watch, then read on.
Let me remind you of what fever rates look like right now in the United States via the Kinsa “health weather” map:
To panic, or not to panic…that is the question. The fever map looks pretty ‘healthy’ to me.
OPEN FOR BUSINESS?
CDC, FEMA Have Created Plan To Reopen America. Here’s The Projected Start Date And Phases.
The plan essentially starts now with the goal that communities can start to be reopened on May 1.
A White House official told The Washington Post: “Beneath the bluster of the president saying May 1, and he’s in charge, and all the other things, there are real efforts to figure out how we could safely and actually do this.”
The plan outlines designating communities in three categories:
May 1 “a bit overly optimistic”?
Mark Levin weighs in on Trump’s claim of “exclusive power” and the “outright idiocy” of media and blue-state govs
While President Trump’s claim of exclusive power to open the economy raises fundamental federalism issues, why is he under attack by Democrats and the media who could not care less about the 10th amendment, let alone most of the rest of the Bill of Rights?
The incoherence and outright idiocy of the blue state governors and media in this regard, especially Slow Cuomo, are blinding.
These governors declare sanctuary status for illegal aliens in direct defiance of the Constitution and federal law, and even insist that federal financial relief be provided to illegal aliens. They demand that the federal government provide their states with hospital beds and ventilators, despite the fact such provisions are first and foremost a state and local responsibility even under state law. But clearly they hadn’t been a priority before now. They demand that the federal government make up their budget shortfalls and provide funds to businesses the governors closed and to workers the governors put out of work, despite the fact that the federal government had no role in these decisions.
When it comes to federalism, these blue state governors want all the power without the financial responsibility and accountability. They want federal tax dollars and bailouts without strings. If they decide when businesses can open and people can work again in their states, then they should pay the bill until they do.
It’s a great point. You’d think that as authoritarian as some of these governors are, they’d be pulling for Trump to have the ‘total control’ that he claims. And the media as well, who loved it when Obama said he had a ‘pen and a phone’ and would use it to go around Congress.
WATCH: Police Arrest ‘Reopen’ Protester; Say Constitutionally Protected Rights ‘Non-Essential’
On Tuesday, a group of around 75 to 100 “Reopen NC” demonstrators gatheredoutside the state’s General Assembly building to call on Cooper to ease the restrictions so more people can begin to get back to work. As noted by The Daily Caller, Reopen NC’s Facebook page has now amassed nearly 30,000 members.
The Raleigh Police Department issued a series of tweets on Tuesday detailing their response to the protests. “We are aware of the [Reopen NC] protest that is occurring in Downtown Raleigh on Wilmington and Jones Street and are monitoring the situation,” the department tweeted. “The protestors are in violation of the Governor’s Executive Order and have been asked to leave,” Raleigh Police added in another tweet. “We are reopening Wilmington and Jones Street. The protest has been cleared. There was one arrest made.”
In response to someone asking “what part of the governor’s order was violated” in this instance, Raleigh Police responded: “Protesting is a non-essential activity.”

Ten Governors Announce Regional Plans To Re-Open Economy. Trump Responds.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) announced on Monday that the “worst” of the coronavirus outbreak in New York was now over, and that his government was forming a partnership with six other Northeastern states to coordinate how to end the lockdown.
According to The New York Times, the partnership, which includes the states of Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, consists of a bipartisan coalition of governors who will form plans for easing coronavirus lockdown restrictions over time.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced a similar partnership with Oregon and Washington on the same day, with the three governments emphasizing the importance of a uniform response on the West Coast in a joint statement, reported The Los Angeles Times.
…overall, the research concludes it is unlikely that life will return any time soon to the way it was before the virus’ emergence.
Nothing Compares to This Explosion in Federal Spending
President Trump, with the support of Congress, is poised to preside over an unprecedented explosion of government spending that already is set to shatter deficit records and could grow further if plans for more coronavirus relief bills -- nearing a potential total price tag of $5 trillion -- become reality.
Even accounting for inflation, no modern administration has seen such levels of spending, covering everything from FDR's New Deal to recession-era rescues in the early part of the Obama administration.
The Fund expects a “partial recovery” in 2021, but this is conditional on an improvement in the health crisis.
‘It’s a complete abomination’ says Wall Street money manager about hedge funds applying for bailouts from small-business recovery funds
The Bloomberg article makes the case that hedge funds, which tend to charge 2% fees for managing other people’s money and take 20% of the profits from their bets, are enticed by the roughly $350 billion recovery package that offers loans to cover everything from payroll to rent and utilities for hair salons, restaurants and other businesses that have been bludgeoned by forced closures to help mitigate the spread of the infectious disease that was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December and has now infected nearly 2 million people globally.
The story hits upon a raging debate on Wall Street about whether hedge funds should avail themselves of bailout funds during the pandemic, which has hit nearly every corner of the economy and threatens to throw the U.S. into one of its deepest recessions in generations.
Chamath Palihapitiya, chief executive of venture-capital firm Social Capital LP, last weekargued that the Fed’s massive coronavirus stimulus package helps the ultrarich at the expense of ordinary American workers.
“On Main Street today, people are getting wiped out right now — rich CEOs are not, boards that have horrible governance are not. People are,” Palihapitiya said last Thursday on CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report.”
“Just to be clear on who we are talking about. We’re talking about a hedge fund that serves a bunch of billionaire family offices. Who cares? They don’t get the summer in the Hamptons?” Palihapitiya said. “Who cares? Let them get wiped out.”
Over the past three weeks, the U.S. job market has suffered more than 16 million job losses.
Bloomberg reported that some hedge funds already have applied for small-business aid, certifying that the “current economic uncertainty makes this loan request necessary to support the ongoing operations.”
And with not that many strings attached, either
Here's How Medicare for All Would Deal with the Coronavirus Pandemic
Most of the field of candidates running for the Democratic presidential nomination at one point signed on to the idea of Medicare for All, a compromise proposal by Bernie Sanders for universal health care coverage. In a pandemic, people panic, and seek security. Many may think that this event proves the need for universal, government-run coverage. What would that look like in reality? How would Medicare for All handle the coronavirus pandemic?
Luckily, we have a real world example that is dealing with coronavirus today: Great Britain's National Health Service (NHS). The NHS has long been known for its tradeoff between universal, mostly free coverage, and rationing of care. Now, theNHS faces real shortages of resources as hospitals get overrun by coronavirus patients. So much so that they have implemented a scale system to determine whether a patient gets treatment or not.
The NHS even published a handy chart to show everyone who lives and who dies:
Scoop: GOP senators demand WHO explain early coronavirus response in China - Axios
A group of U.S. senators have sent a letter to the World Health Organization asking it to provide an accounting of its early handling of the coronavirus outbreak in China.
Why it matters: Rising scrutiny of the WHO has led to GOP calls to cut U.S. funding for the organization.
What they're saying: "American taxpayers fund the WHO, and it is up to us to make sure those taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely," Sen. Rick Scott and six other GOP senators wrote in the April 14 letter addressed to WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Inside Huawei’s D.C. Influence Campaign
Former cybersecurity officials cash checks from Chinese company tied to 5G spying fears
Former Florida congressman Cliff Stearns once spearheaded Congress's response to the risks that plague the nation's information infrastructure, using his influence to warn Americans about the "increased possibility of a devastating cyberattack." Now, he is among the growing number of former U.S. cyber and national security officials who have worked for a Chinese tech giant widely seen as the leading cybersecurity threat in the world.
Huawei, China's leading provider of 5G infrastructure, claims to be a private company that is independent from the Chinese government. But intelligence officials across the globe believe that the company can serve as a conduit for Chinese espionage, which has prompted American allies such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia to restrict or prohibit the firm from operating within their borders. In the United States, Huawei was indicted in January 2019 and American companies were prohibited from doing business with the firm.
In response, Huawei has launched a two-pronged, multimillion-dollar offensive to assuage the concerns of policymakers and the public, hiring an army of D.C. insiders like Stearns, whose work with Huawei spanned from 2014 to 2018, to convince Congress and the White House to relax sanctions and pouring more than $1 million into advertorials in major outlets, including the New York Times.
State Department leaked cables renew theories on origin of coronavirus
A Chinese laboratory at the center of new theories about how the coronavirus pandemic started was the subject of multiple urgent warnings inside the U.S. State Department two years ago, according to a new report.
U.S. Embassy officials warned in January 2018 about inadequate safety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab and passed on information about scientists conducting risky research on coronavirus from bats, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The United Kingdom has said that the idea that the virus, which has turned into a full-blown global pandemic, was leaked from a Wuhan lab is "no longer being discounted."
A member of the U.K. government's emergency committee of senior officials claimed Sunday: "There is a credible alternative view (to the zoonotic theory) based on the nature of the virus. Perhaps it is no coincidence that there is a laboratory in Wuhan."
Foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang said in a recent opinion piece on Fox News that"many Chinese believe the virus either was deliberately released or accidentally escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a P4-level bio-safety facility."
He added: "This lab, known for studying coronaviruses, is not far from the market that had been initially identified as the source of the outbreak."
In a series of diplomatic cables labeled "Sensitive But Unclassified," U.S. Embassy officials warned that the lab had massive management weaknesses, posed severe health risks and warned Washington to get involved.
New Chinese Assault Carrier Catches Fire
The incident is clearly bad news for China's navy, known as the PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy). Yet although it will clearly set back the fitting out process for the ship, outward signs are that it was dealt with quickly. It is unlikely to prevent the completion of the ship.
And this is only the first of several Type-075 assault carriers. The second is being built just yards away at the Hudong–Zhonghua shipyard. Yesterday we reported that it is likely to be floated into the river imminently.

Dem Super PAC “American Bridge” Got $100k Donation From Chinese Govt. Linked Firm
A prominent Democratic group poised to spend millions backing former vice president Joe Biden received $100,000 in the form of stock shares in the Chinese technology giant Baidu from an anonymous donor. Baidu, like many Chinese technology companies, is closely affiliated with China's ruling Communist Party.
American Bridge, an opposition research group founded by liberal operative David Brock, reported the receipt of the 450 shares in late 2018, a gift that was disclosed in its latest tax filings. The multinational internet services company acts as China's Google and operates under a degree of state party control. The gift was valued at $101,037, according to the organization's Form 990. It is unclear whether the group sold the stock or opted to retain it in the hope share prices would rise.
American Bridge did not respond to a request for comment.
Andrew Cuomo’s Daughter Quickly Deletes Tweet Showing Che Guevara Photo In Living Room
To Democrats, a freedom-loving patriot like Donald Trump is to be looked down upon because he puts Americans first. And yet, they have no problem honoring – literally, honoring – racist, murderous tyrants.
For anybody to have a framed picture of Che Guevara in their living room speaks volumes.
But it’s even worse when you’re the daughter of the governor of New York.
Check out the tweet that was quickly deleted by Mariah Kennedy Cuomo (click on photos for a better look)…
Ummmm…why does Andrew Cuomo’s daughter have a framed photograph of COMMUNIST MURDERER Che Guevara in her living room?!?!

CNN Basically Published A Press Release From The Chinese Military
CNN published a report Monday from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) about how the country’s Navy is reportedly doing a much better job containing the novel coronavirus than its American counterparts.
The report came from China’s English PLA website, CNN noted. The network wrote that their Navy “has done a much better job controlling coronavirus than the US Navy,” according to the PLA.
Ted Cruz Unloads On ‘CCP Propagandist’ Jim Acosta For ‘Fraudulent’ Reporting. Trump Jr. Proposes Name Change For CNN.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted CNN’s Jim Acosta on Tuesday after Acosta defended communist China against criticism from President Donald Trump during the White House Coronavirus Task Force press briefing.
Acosta tweeted: “Other scapegoats blamed by Trump: China. Obama administration.”
Cruz responded, “Why is CNN apologizing for the Communist Party of China? You’re supposed to be journalists, not CCP propagandists.”
Trump Jr. responded by proposing a name change for CNN, writing, “Maybe time for a name change from CNN to Xi NN. It’s much more fitting.”
Bloomberg News killed investigation into wealthy Chinese communists
NPR published a revealing story today about Bloomberg News, specifically it’s handling of a story which would have been critical of wealthy Chinese communists including Xi Jinping. Bloomberg killed the story over concern the entire news outlet would be kicked out of China if it were published. The story in question was actually a follow-up to a story published in 2012 which won the site awards. The follow-up gained steam in 2013 and suddenly the head office went silent. The story was killed and, officially, the excuse given was that it needed more reporting. Butmonths later the editor-in-chief spelled out the real reason on a conference call:
Finally, in late October 2013, Bloomberg’s famously intense founding editor-in-chief, Matthew Winkler, weighed in, via a private conference call. In attendance: senior news executives in New York and the China-based investigative team. NPR has obtained audio of Winkler’s remarks on the call.
“It is for sure going to, you know, invite the Communist Party to, you know, completely shut us down and kick us out of the country,” Winkler said. “So, I just don’t see that as a story that is justified.”…
The concern wasn’t merely that China could kick Bloomberg News out of the country but that it could take action against Mike Bloomberg’s other business interests which are the basis of his fortune.
DEMENTED OLD CIRCUS MONKEY & THE COMMIE
“Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now,” Obama said in a video posted to Twitter.

LA County Sheriff Frees THOUSANDS MORE Prisoners and Then Throws Himself a Self-Congratulatory Parade
In a tone of self-awe, the sheriff gave himself a huge pat on the back for freeing the criminals.
"In the wildest dreams of the ACLU, all of the different groups who have been activists in that regard about the jail system, they never would have thought it would have been possible. But we took the responsible approach. We started with those who had 30-days or less of their sentence, misdemeanor crimes, we went with those who are at-risk because of their age or prior condition, then we started working on pre-trial detentions and and technical parole violations. And it's really kind of humorous because we got a letter from a long list of organizations that are advocating on behalf of those incarcerated in the jail system and they were asking us for doing things that we had already initiated two weeks earlier."
Well give this man a parade.
And it would be a very long parade. There would be 4,200 entrants in that parade. Four thousand two hundred.
It's galling when the head lawman of one of the most populous counties in the country threatens to arrest people over getting too close, then frees actual criminals and throws himself a self-congratulatory parade over it.
