Some Lawmakers Ask Capitol to Withhold Pay Until Shutdown Ends, Citing Military, DACA

At least three Republican congressmen and one Democrat asked Capitol Hill administrators Saturday to withhold their salary until the government shutdown ends.

Another Republican legislator also announced he will donate his shutdown salary to veterans organizations.

By Saturday afternoon, Reps. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.), Dan Donovan (R-N.Y.) and Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) published letters they sent to the Capitol's administrative office asking that their pay be withheld until the government shutdown ends.

Barletta, a former Hazleton mayor running against Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) in the midterm elections, blamed Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) for the shutdown.

"I have asked the CAO to withhold my pay until Senate Democrats end this pointless #SchumerShutdown," he said, accusing Democrats of using amnesty for illegal immigrants as a political tool in such an important time.

Barletta said forcing the permanence of the DACA program will "encourage a new wave of illegal immigration."

"It will also encourage politicians to play to illegal immigrants for votes instead of considering American citizens first," Barletta said.

MacArthur, of Toms River, said it is "unacceptable" to continue to be paid while members of the military and federal law enforcement continue to work without pay.

Congress will, however, still receive paychecks, he said.

It is unacceptable to me that Members of Congress are still being paid, while our troops, federal law enforcement officers, and other government employees are not. https://twitter.com/RepTomMacArthur/status/954788228225216512

Writing to Chief Administrative Officer Phil Kiko, MacArthur asked that his pay be withheld "until an appropriations agreement has taken effect."

Maloney, of Putnam County, wrote a similar letter to Kiko's office, saying his own constituents wouldn't be paid if they didn't do their job either.

I'll give up my paycheck if the government shuts down.

I'm sending a letter to the House Chief Administrative Office asking that my pay be withheld in the event of a shutdown. The people I represent wouldn't get paid if they didn't do their job - and neither should Congress.

Donovan posted a similar message to Facebook on Saturday afternoon.

Rep. Scott Taylor (R-Va.), a retired Navy SEAL, said on Twitter that he will donate each shutdown day's salary to a different military or veterans organization while our troops go largely unpaid.

Taylor said that his Saturday salary would be given to a group called VetsHouse.

Congress shouldn't be paid during this #GovtShutdown , just like some of you aren't being paid & especially if our military & first responders are not. I will donate my salary to a military/veterans' charity each day. Today's pay will go to Vetshouse, Inc.http://www.vetshouseinc.org

In addition, five Democratic senators from states won by President Trump authored a bill to withhold lawmaker pay in a similar fashion, The Hill reported.

Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) put forth the bill late Friday.

Heitkamp said in a statement that if legislators cannot "fulfill their basic duty and keep the government open," they do not deserve to be paid.

Each member of the sitting Congress should be fined 50% of his/her annual salary each time they do their jobs so poorly that the government shuts down.

Totally agree, JB!
