Hello everyone,

With the storms sweeping our country recently, I thought I would call everyone's attention to a few items that can vastly improve our preparedness.  The first is a new portable solar panel from Anker.  They have two, one with two panels and one with three.  Go with the three panel one.  The extra couple ounces is worth it, delivering far more bang for the buck, and maximizes the weight vs. rate. The three panel version is a 21W 2-Port USB Solar Panel Charger with PowerIQ Technology.

It would take a considerable amount of time and space to quantify what a monumental difference and advancement this new Anker solar panel is over my previous solar panel.  The Anker solar panel is every bit as durable, and is about the same size and weight folded.  However, my old solar panel only delivered 7W at 1 amp out of 2 panels with no Power IQ technology, and cost a lot more!

You can purchase the Anker solar panel here:  http://amzn.to/1NNDanZ

You can view it on Anker's website here:  http://bit.ly/1mg2R7O

Here are a few of its features taken from Amazon for your convenience:

Off-the-grid Power

Probably not first article since you're back but good to see you posting Rahthrae :)

So, now that you've re-awakened the geek in me, I have to ask (though I may answer my own question "typing it aloud" so to speak, that in the idea of preparedness, not on some hike somewhere (not something I can do)....

In Peace:

What good are our devices if a natural disaster wiped out power to the point there are no towers?  I admit there might be some satellite capability, especially if you also have an antenna but those draw more power too. Yet, in an emergency, you'd be glad for contact with the outside world, of that there is no question.

In War, as we are now due to one of many enemies declaring war on us:

The centralized power grid will be a natural target, along with centralized communications, and the natural tendency of people to be drawn to what's familiar, such as larger thoroughfares, schools/universities, shopping malls, where we might assume some sort of relief centers/hubs would be established due to living our lives in the middle of a Progressive Humanist Collectivism for a good 3 generations now. The point being then also, that likely all these things (and probably more, I am a novice at this) will probably be monitored and controlled by enemies, who, in all likelihood, are monitoring communications and looking for efforts to re-connect to the collective "Internet" thru its normal ports and standard networking protocols, to find the "stragglers" and capture, kill or enslave them. I'd probably not want to try connecting to anything until I saw a direct personal sign of our military taking control of something I knew was gone, or at least a military of organized enough establishment that it shows its ability to defeat the enemy in my area, which could easily be a citizen's militia. Obviously if I were a member of that militia or not isn't something I'd discuss, as it might prompt others to discuss the same and then this thread is replete with people revealing information that our enemies should never have. I am thinking this out as I type so pardon my verbose manner.

I guess this put a head on the question, which is simply: How do I, using portable devices, like they did in Egypt, establish an alternate "prepared" network, one that I can have ready to run say in Linux via an Android or iPhone using a Pearl or other script (does such a thing exist, and the reason I'd want it ready to run is that it would alter the porting assignments, change some aspects of encryption, and I'd have run it prior to the event so that those I want to be able to connect with and to connect with me won't be lost, while maintaining the sound of "noise" in our transmissions, hiding ourselves from our enemies to then be able to reveal ourselves easily to our friends whoever they may be in that instance.

A side of me thinks I'd want some sort of omni-directional (360 degree) antenna, which would be perfect if the background noise appearance (a constant transmission of random information embedded in, throughout, and over the signal to mask its actual contents and use, constant to avoid detection as an "intermittent signal" by anyone that might be monitoring), yet, a beam may be better in cases where you know the patrol routes, know the "troop" locations, and can reach a further distance without detection, via the db rejection on the antenna. But none of this matters if I don't have a way to make one of my devices turn into a "hotspot" for lack of a better term. I'll also submit to you this, that if the above has any semblance of purpose for consideration (assuming no one has done this yet) that we figure out who we have across the country to establish this, the where and any sort of direct pattern known only to those who are a part of making it happen) so that our pre-catastrophe planning isn't thwarted, has contingency plans and redudancy, and, creates a means of uniting all who are willing to fight to defeat whatever enemy it is that invaded us.

I am sure you can fill in gaps and am not soliciting to know if anything like I am talking about exists, and would ask that if you now of such thing it isn't revealed, or for darn sure not with much detail, and that we pretend it doesn't exist and if we get this working we're their contingency plan too.

If we're gonna think the preparedness route then let's take it to the brainstorming that needs to be done, for that is the true preparedness to not be shocked by a situation to where much of what we know we're stifled to act upon.

Note: what we're talking about here may include getting access to higher elevations, using repeaters that broadcast everything on a different frequency and our actual devices being connected to these repeating type devices, and the ability to switch it and move everything, as well as destroy it before it can be stolen by enemies, upon discovery. To me this is a paramount concern because the communications provides our ability to organize and rebel or otherwise be a distraction that the more militant organizations who want to defeat our enemies can communicate with and use, should we want to communicate information to them, intel or such, that will aid in our nation's liberation from such an invasion.

Hi Toddy!

I can tell you that what Rahth has posted and taken the time to research on this is amazing! I own exactly the three things Rahth has posted on. They are awesome and they really do give you your own personal microgrid! When it comes to being prepared, Rahth does extensive research and I can attest the things he chooses are great gear!

I'm a gear geek too now! :)

heheh I believe you and believe this stuff is a great idea, I just want to take it the next step, I mean, it's wise for us to consider things, instead of just leave it to the Pentagon to make 50 year models.

Hi Toddy,

Thanks, it's good to be able to sit, and post some again.  My preps don't have a lot to do with TEOTWAWKI scenarios.  I live in an apartment, and I am alone which then takes me to never having prepped much in the communications area.  Robin's husband would be the best one to ask concerning communications because I know very little about it.  Even at that, I do not know that he has knowledge about what you're asking for here.

The gear above has very little to do with keeping communication towers running.  What it does do, however; is provide you with a means of keeping your batteries charged, flashlights, mp3 players, Kindles, tablets, radios, phones etc. going during emergencies.  If someone's car broke down, and their phone's battery was close to dead, they would also have a way of recharging it with the battery discussed above.  The Kindle can hold a whole personal library, and weighs far less than many books.  It's a lot more portable too.  You can easily keep that charged with the aforementioned gear in the above post, and once it has books downloaded, an outside connection is not necessary to view them.

I hope this helps better explain my reasoning for trying to draw people's attention to the above gear, and is somewhat helpful to you.  I'm sorry I have so little help to offer for communications after a massive invasion, EMP, or TEOTWAWKI event.  My preps have never been geared for that.  My preps tend to be more geared towards getting me through a period of time that I might end up without work due to the economy, or some weather event robs me of power or even my home.

God bless.

Oh sure, wasn't even questioning your reasoning. I was merely typing outloud what it made me consider, figured you don't mind the feedback.

I wasn't thinking it could keep towers running. I was thinking we become the communications medium for like-minded Americans across the country, to assure there will be a way, and if there's already others, we are just another system an redundancy, a backup of backups to the backup, and your deal here means we might be able to be so for a window of time in such emergencies, a "grid" of us with microgrids that we've networked together across our own "Internet," so we're prepared and ready, be it in an apartment or in a cabin at 5000 ft hahaah

Just seems like a good idea to be ready to replace if we can and with this microgrid it is even more reasonable to consider doing.

Hi Toddy,

Oh, I don't mind feedback at all. I welcome it.  :-)  I was just making sure that everyone reading this realized that the above would only be useful for personal electronic gear.  The two-way radios I do have would easily be kept operating with the above as would the radio I got recently from Countycomm which has some capability to receive beyond mere FM & AM stations.  Hell, my Steripen also uses AA batteries, and could be kept running from the above as well.  I use a Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus that works great with solar panels to charge AA and AAA batteries.  Thrunite and Fenix have usb chargers for 18650 batteries that also work seamlessly with the above solar charger as well. Three of my flashlights have on-board usb charging capability as does the aforementioned radio if it has rechargeable batteries. For those wondering, Sanyo Eneloops are what you should buy.

However, if an EMP hits, probably not much of my electronic gear will work afterwards.  When it comes to survival, I would not bet my life on anything electronic, and any gear I have towards that end is damn near indestructible.  I also have the skill set to compensate should my compass break, or any of my other gear fail for some reason.  I believe that people should go out of their way to know what their priorities of survival are, have a small amount of solid gear that addresses those, and have the skill set to adapt and overcome should any of that gear fail, or they are separated from that gear for whatever reason.  In that, I feel comfortable in my skill set in a variety of environments and conditions.

I would imagine, but do not know, that larger power generating equipment would be needed to keep communications hubs on a larger scale running.  Yes, your idea is a good one.  I recently bought a book on ham radio, but I have not made the time to read it yet.  People in small communities that were networked together could definitely aid in one another's security if they all had the above gear and two-way radios that were compatible. They would have to have a plan in place, and have worked that plan.  Robin has a good blog post on communications you might wish to read.

I only purchased the book on ham radio out of curiosity, and to just have one more skill under my belt should the need arise.  Skills like that as well as sewing, canning, herbalism, hunting, gunsmithing, mechanics, basic electrical knowledge, trapping, first aid and trauma amongst many others are all skill sets that people should know and will be most useful in any large scale disaster.  If you research your above query, and come to any conclusions, that would be a great post.  I'd love to read that.

God bless.

Hi Toddy!

As Rahth said, I can answer some questions on radios and towers for communications for you through Rick. He has been doing this for years. He has many radios, 40 channel, Ham and he has a 75 foot tower out behind our home! I was also a communications operator/dispatcher, so I know a bit myself.

Here is one of his radios with all the equipment to go with it!

I haven't plugged it in in years but I have a tricked out TR 457 CB, 200 channels ssb (the Radio Shack equivalent of a President Madison CB), speech processor built in, etc., D-104s no longer work, have 3 of them need to do some soldering. Never needed a linear since radio has a 24 volt peak from a .2 carrier on ssb, and if you go horizontal you can usually hit anywhere, especially during sun spots.

But this is the point, and to it I'll also add @Rahthrae as well as anyone else, lead paint is useful, sound proofing lead sheeting can be expensive and need a roof to handle the weight, but it'd be a combination of either of those and aluminum foil, as well as solar blanket polyester to erase heat signature, just some things to consider in being emp proofed and achieving stealth from drones and other heat detection.

I remember "ham phones" too with dual channels for send and receive, as a free alternative to cell phones, not as reliable but it's always an option. And let us not forget flourescent bulbs at radar bandwidth length, if I remember right around 6 inches long, with a copper wire wrapped around them and soldered at both ends achieves deflection of many radar bands. No, not a preparedness person, but I do tend to recall what I've learned from those who are, some who even trained with Bo Gritz (sp?).

Yes, Rick does shoot skip quite often when conditions are right! He's been into radios since he was in his early 20's. Has a lot of them and switches them in and out as need be. Actually, he likes to play around with his different ones. The ham radios get out quite a long distance. For the regular radios he has heater boxes. He does have a really nice tower and good antenna.

At my job we had the 800Mhz system. That could reach anywhere.

Well, a little brainstorm just hit: Have we considered using the circuitry of these old systems with modern day transistors, to then achieve higher power through modulation, speech compression, etc., that would make the basic CB a Ham Radio, and a Ham Radio NASA capable? To me this is the instant consideration in light of Ohm's Law and the transistor conentration, say on a video card with 3000 cores, or, processors with 10 million transistors. May be some old inventor hobby playing with this stuff left in me yet hahaha

I'm really not sure how basic electrical theory would suddenly make you think of that.  For those that do not know what Ohm's law is, you can find it here - http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/ohmlaw.html

Well the whole idea of Large Scale Integration of my era to today's nano meter die explanations to show why one cpu may be better than another, as well as graphic processors explaining the number of cores/stream processors they have, is to show that the distance an electron has to travel is shorter, and therefore we will have increased throughput from that alone.

You may recall a time when there were motherboards with another cpu slot, a math co-processor slot, some even had 4 processor slots altogether, and then there is when they didn't have integrated graphics, which hasn't worked out as well due to the need for higher speeds to process bits into pixel organized to convey animation, but the time is coming with DDR4 RAM, and higher than dual channel, the norm is for the next set to be DDR5 with even more channels, or maybe it'll take on a "Q" for "Quad Data Rate" with a "1" to start a whole new generation of RAM, with 4 channels that are used simultaneously. Intel (who I don't trust no matter what) built, I believe in 2010 an optical North Bridge, which is the beginning of computers moving from electrons to Photons, and the beginning of applying Ohm's Law to light.

There are many other variables which, in some cases prove this can be a great gimmick. For instance the Talatin core was exceptional, the Pentium IV moved away from it originally, but the heat issues cause a return to the Talatin core in later designs, though it has less transistors it was capable of almost twice the throughput of the regular Pentium IV, and that was with the Celeron model (the Pentium III Talatin designs that failed to pass certain tests on some pins would have those pins cut off and then be resold as Celeron at the time), and the Talatin core also generates less heat. And, for what I gather in looking into all of this, the Talatin core was the beginning of the direction Intel went to achieve the CPUs they have now.

Ohm's law has many applications, it's the principle by which our minds think an election can save our country, that changing who is in office alone is significant, versus changing on the basis of something, changing to something specifically that will make the selection bring about the result expected. "Ronulans" (for Ron Paul) "Obamabots," and now "Trumpolytes" (Trolls who put anyone down who isn't cheering Donald Trump, a combination of Trump's name and the mythical Troglodyte) are perfect examples of this phenomena, especially when they gang up on people. I find it roots in denial of the fact that fixing America is a long road and to avoid taking responsiblity for the Constitution and what it guarantees, which I state in relation to the idea they jump to who says what they want to hear and will go no further, for the effort exerted to go further is a form of "resistance" and these "groupies,' for lack of a better term, treat those who do not believe as they do as enemies, and ignore the fact that that person will not have it easy and we'll likely have to help them accomplish what they must do if it's genuinely in ours and, thereby, America's best interest. I know this will especially hold true if the candidate chosen is to be significant in achieving the goal of our government operating according to the Constitution.

I learned of Ohm's Law from practical application when working with an Electrical Engineer and, so far, it has proven incredibly flexible in where you can see it in action, in gaining a macro focus to understand some dynamics.

Consider that the Federal Courts used to travel from state to state, even territories, in a "circuit" long before there was any notion of such things (the way the Districts were drawn up is from the Circuit Court's "circuit" it traveled to hear appeals), before the light bulb and any practical application of electricity, and you see the history of the circuit and even Ohm's Law supersedes the modern day atomic theory, that these are merely restating old principles with a new nomenclature.

In one more little piece of this, if I remember it's even in the Federalist Papers, they'd call a river a "communication" in relation to their navigability enabling commerce, the path of least resistance to one being industrious and selling their goods to a larger world.

You asked so, there ya go hahah
