Reince Priebus is being replaced as White House chief of staff by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, President Trump tweeted this afternoon.
“I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff,” Trump wrote. “He is a Great American and a Great Leader. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration.
“I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country,” the president continued.”We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!”
The departure of Priebus follows attacks by newly installed White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, who reported directly to the president and not to Priebus. It’s not clear whether Gen. Kelly will tolerate this arrangement – or exactly what he will tolerate from Scaramucci, who has been going after various White House staffers.
There were conflicting reports about whether Priebus resigned or was fired, but the bottom line is the same. The president did not have confidence in him and had hired an antagonist who reported directly to the president, Scaramucci, without Priebus’s knowledge. He was, whether he resigned or not, ousted.
If a White House ever needed a general running it, this is one such White House. Kelly will begin on Monday morning and a cabinet meeting will follow his swearing in on Monday morning
Meantime, Scaramucci’s wife announced that she is divorcing him, citing his “naked political ambition” and his relentless efforts to ingratiate himself with Trump.
Priebus and Scaramucci both accompanied Trump on Air Force One for a trip to Long Island today.
Here are Trump’s tweets. He sent them out shortly after Air Force One landed at Joint Base Andrews, returning from the trip. Priebus made the trip back and was seen getting out of Air Force One and joined the motorcade back to the White House, even though he had been replaced. Scaramucci did not appear to take Air Force One back to Washington, according to the White House pool report.
