List of 380 Sheriffs in 40 States Demand Congressional Action on Border Wall and Illegal Immigration

Proclaiming that illegal immigration has endangered national security, as well as America’s law enforcement and first responders, hundreds of sheriffs have demanded that Congress fund President Donald Trump’s proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall, implement immigration reform and take action against sanctuary cities and states.

“Without border security and immigration reform, more Americans will continue to be victims of crime. Now is the time to act,” read a letter signed by 380 sheriffs from 40 states. CLICK HERE to read the letter and see the list of sheriffs and states participating.

Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson of Bristol County, Mass., an outspoken critic of illegal immigration who led the initiative, said Wednesday, “We’re calling on Congress to take action now, on the security issues at the border and against sanctuary policies in our states, cities and towns.”

The sheriffs’ demands are supported by the National Sheriffs’ Association.

Sheriffs from around the country sent a letter to all Members of Congress outlining the need for congressional action on securing America’s border.

“These sanctuary policies, including the laws California enacted, directly undermine and limit cooperation and collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement, making it harder for America’s sheriffs to protect our citizens and legal residents. In addition, the problem of MS-13 and other gangs that operate back and forth across our borders has become worse because of our failure to secure the border and the continued court-ordered catch and release policies,” Hodgson said.

The recently passed omnibus budget bill allocated only a fraction of the amount needed for construction of the border wall, although Trump called it a good downpayment. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has taken aggressive action against sanctuary cities and states.

The sheriffs contended that the continued inaction of Congress on issues of immigration has “weakened their efforts” to ensure safety in their jurisdictions.

“Congress’ inaction undermines sheriffs’ ability to protect our citizens,” National Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Jonathan Thompson said. “Sheriffs across this country have signed this letter because Congress cannot continue to weaken our efforts to make our communities as safe as possible.”

I think there is much more support for this wall than the media would have us believe.

I agree.

I totally agree, JG!

They are already building the wall.

Trump, in campaign-style speech, promises the wall: 'We're getting that sucker built!'

President Trump touted the early stages of construction of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, promising to “get that sucker built” in a campaign-style speech Thursday in Richfield, Ohio.

The speech, which lasted over an hour, was slated to help roll out his $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan, but he also hit a wide range of agenda items, including his paramount campaign promise: the border wall.

“We started our wall—what a thing of beauty,” Trump said, noting critics suggested he would “give up.” “Has he given up? No I never give up.”

Trump added: “We’re getting that sucker built!”

The president’s camments come after he floated the idea of reprogramming military-designated funding to finance construction of the wall. Congressional sources told Fox News this week the move would be “impossible” without congressional approval at some point in the “reprogramming process,” as the money would need to be moved from one agency to another.

The $1.3 trillion omnibus spending package that was passed last week designated only $1.6 billion toward construction of the wall. The president repeatedly has called the $1.6 billion a “down payment” for the wall.

“The wall looks good. It’s properly designed. That what I do. I build,” Trump said. “I was always very good at building, I think better than being president. I was very good at building. But I think I’ll be better as president... that will be good.”

Trump discussed the different prototypes reviewed for construction of the wall, and said that “we have something special happening” in the early stages of building.

On Wednesday, the president tweeted photos of the “start of our Southern Border WALL!” which were taken earlier in California. The Department of Homeland Security said the photos were of an area of border wall replacement, which would be an approximately 2.25-mile section replaced with a 30-foot high bollard-style wall.

Customs and Border Protection chief backs the Trump border wall: 'Walls work. ... Agents know it'

A top Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official pushed back Friday on reports that frontline border agents do not support President Trump’s border wall, telling reporters that “walls work” and that “agents know it.”

Acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello told reporters that agents have repeatedly said that a mix of technology, infrastructure and access to the border are what is necessary to keep the border secure. An important part of this would be effective barriers, and he said that such requests came from the field.

“The truth is that walls work and the data show it and agents know it,” he said.

Vitiello told reporters that the CBP was appreciative of the $1.6 billion funding given to border security measures in the omnibus spending bill and it would fund 100 miles of “border wall system.”

My Sheriff is not among the 400...

You must be from California, Bruce! LOL

I'm not laughing at you, I live in New Jersey and we are almost as bad as California. :)))

I live in Md., but my county is more Republican than the rest of this, basically, one Party blue state. I worked to help the guy get elected. I was actually stunned that he hadn't signed on. He IS 100% about upholding the 2nd amendment. So I guess he's not a total write off...

There is hope yet!

Of course, my sheriff isn't on the list.  Not surprising, since he's also not a fan of the armed citizen.

And once again, he's running unopposed this year. (sigh)

Good info...Putting in tids.

Wow...three of the eleven counties in my congressional have signed on, but not mine.  :(
